Round 11 Preview – League One Men’s

L1-mens-nsw-match-of-the-round-preview

Two local derbies headline Round 11 of the FNSW League One Men’s competition this weekend. One of which is our Match of the Round, with Macarthur Rams set to take on Bulls FC Academy, while Blacktown Spartans and Prospect United will unite for a special cause in their Friday night fixture.

Match of the Round: Macarthur Rams v Bulls FC Academy
Saturday 18 April, 4:30pm, Lynwood Stadium

It’s derby time in Sydney’s south-west as Macarthur Rams host Bulls FC Academy at Lynwood this weekend.

One thing we’ve learned about the Macarthur Rams in 2026 is to expect the unexpected, as they sit in the upper mid-table. With four wins, three draws and three losses to their name in the first third of the season, you’d expect their next target in the rebuild to be securing back-to-back wins.

Last week, they fell to Hurstville Zagreb in both the league and the cup, with coach Dan Mijovic noting his side weren’t up to their recent standards—so expect a response here. Chan Yelchan has been their most consistent goal threat, with Jaidyn Dunn often the provider. They also possess the second-best defence, conceding just 11 goals so far this season (behind only Northern Tigers).

Bulls FC Academy are the one side our cameras haven’t captured in 2026. Sitting fifth at the one-third mark of the season, they are the highest-placed academy side and come into this clash with four points from their last two fixtures.

On the back of a gruelling midweek win against Western City Rangers, they were minutes away from another victory against Central Coast Mariners last Saturday. However, conceding twice late saw them settle for a point. In terms of personnel, Justin Cardozo and Zane Helweh lead their attack, while Henrique Oliveira continues his development in first grade. A win here could see them move as high as third.

You can catch this one on the FNSW YouTube page this Saturday night under the live tab.

Elsewhere

Bankstown City v Hills United
Friday 17 April, 8pm, Jensen Park

Bankstown City saw their winning streak come to an end last Saturday night in their local derby— their first defeat since February. An extensive injury list appeared to catch up with them against Canterbury Bankstown. However, there were positives to take from a strong second-half showing. They will be working on finding more reliable avenues to goal, rather than relying on penalties.

They face a Hills United side still licking their wounds after a heartbreaking defeat to Newcastle Jets. Their frustration stemmed from not taking chances in front of goal, a recurring issue over the past month. Walid Moutaouakkil is a player to watch here, with the wide attacker in strong creative form. Hills are chasing their first win in over a month.

Blacktown Spartans v Prospect United
Friday 17 April, 8:15pm, Blacktown Football Park

Three wins from three at home this month gives Blacktown Spartans the chance to complete a perfect run this Friday night. Last weekend, they moved to the top of the table with a come-from-behind win over Northern Tigers. It was an outstanding team performance, with Austen Booth and Blake Ilitch once again impressing defensively, while Aedon Kyra and Darcy Ellem provided attacking impact.

Perhaps derby football is exactly what Prospect United need to break their winless run. Their last win came in Round 7, and there were signs of nerves last weekend when chasing a result. This is the kind of occasion they would have hoped for after promotion—can they produce a major upset? Marco Turpeinen is one to watch.

Off the field, this match has been dubbed the Vella Cup, with funds being raised in support of Prospect United community member Hayley Vella, who is battling leukaemia. The full story can be found here.
This match will also be streamed on the BDSFA Facebook page so check that out on Friday night.

Hakoah FC v Western City Rangers
Saturday 18 April, 4:30pm, Hensley Athletic Field

Hakoah couldn’t make it three positive results in a row last weekend, falling to Rydalmere Lions away from home. Sitting 12th after one-third of the season, they’ll be hoping their climb starts here. Improving their final-third threat will be high on the agenda this week.

Something has to give between these two sides, both chasing a result to move clear of the bottom two. Western City Rangers sit just one point above Prospect United in 15th. Last weekend, they struggled to convert possession into goals against Dulwich Hill after a slow start. That will be a key focus here as they search for their first win since Round 5.

Northern Tigers v Hurstville Zagreb
Saturday 18 April, 4:30pm, North Turramurra Recreation Area

Not quite panic stations, but Northern Tigers are in need of a result to halt their dip in form. Last weekend, they lost the top-of-the-table clash to Blacktown Spartans away from home. Coach Milad Popalzay noted the performance was a step in the right direction—can they respond here and hold their top-two position?

Hurstville Zagreb, meanwhile, come in off a strong win over Macarthur Rams—their first in several weeks—which has eased pressure. They also progressed in the Australia Cup and recorded a much-needed clean sheet. Jonathan Maras is one to watch in attack.

Dulwich Hill v Canterbury Bankstown
Saturday 18 April, 5pm, Arlington Oval

According to our semi-reliable records, Dulwich Hill secured three consecutive wins for the first time since joining the division in 2023 last weekend. They delivered a near textbook away performance against Western City Rangers. Goalkeeper Andrew Di Blasio stood out, along with Jesper Webber, who registered both a goal and an assist.

They face a Canterbury Bankstown side fresh off a derby win over Bankstown City—a result that could spark momentum heading into the mid-season grind. William Kounnas remains a key attacking threat, while Patrick Savor also found the scoresheet. Their defence held firm in the second half to secure the points.

Newcastle Jets v Rydalmere Lions
Saturday 18 April, 5pm, Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility

Potentially one of the matches of the round sees Newcastle Jets chase a third straight win. Last week, the academy showed resilience and depth to secure victory, with Archie Brideson scoring winners in both first grade and U20s. Dallo Sandy also impressed. This match presents a chance to secure back-to-back home wins for the first time since early July last season.

Rydalmere Lions will provide a stern test, having lost just once in 2026. They defeated Hakoah 3–1 last weekend, their first three-goal performance since Round 3. Nicholas Azzone, Nikola Pintur, and Marcus Sparacino all found the scoresheet.

Inter Lions v Central Coast Mariners
Saturday 18 April, 7pm, Majors Bay Reserve

Inter Lions continued their run of draws last weekend with a 1–1 result against Prospect United. They took the lead through a superb Zac Sfiligoi strike but couldn’t hold on. They’ve scored more than once in a match just once this season, highlighting their attacking struggles.

Central Coast Mariners have covered plenty of ground recently, with this match concluding a five-game road stretch. After a tough start, they could take seven points from five matches with a win here—a solid return. Last weekend, they came from behind to draw with Bulls FC Academy, with their bench making a key impact.
