Round 14 Preview – League One Men’s
Just when it looked like the FNSW League One Men’s table was beginning to settle, last weekend’s results have thrown both the promotion race and relegation battle wide open heading into Round 14.
With plenty of teams still having something to play for, there’s no shortage of intrigue this weekend, headlined by a blockbuster Match of the Round at Penshurst Park.
Match of the Round: Hurstville Zagreb vs Blacktown Spartans
Friday 8 May, 8:00pm – Penshurst Park
Two sides looking to bounce back from defeat will go head-to-head as Hurstville Zagreb host Blacktown Spartans.
Hurstville are in the middle of a tough stretch, having faced four of the top five teams in the past five weeks. Despite the challenge, they’ve proven they belong at this level, losing their last three matches by just a single goal following their Round 10 win over Macarthur Rams.
After a narrow loss to Central Coast Mariners last weekend, coach Valerio Silvestro noted that “team performances have been there for a while, results will follow” — a sentiment that reflects their recent efforts. Jonathan Maras and Alessandro Lacalandra, who scored last week, remain key threats, while Michael Neil and George Antonis are also players to watch.
Blacktown Spartans, meanwhile, suffered their first defeat since Round 4 last weekend, going down to Macarthur Rams. Results elsewhere limited the damage, but another loss here could see them slip to second if Northern Tigers win — added motivation heading into this clash.
They were without Aedon Kyra last weekend due to his wedding, and attacking responsibility is likely to fall on Suleyman Bangura, Darcy Ellem and Riley Chapple, with Christian Nascimben an option off the bench. After bouncing back strongly from their first loss of the season, can they respond again?

Prospect United vs Bankstown City
Friday 8 May, 8:00pm – Blacktown Football Park
Prospect United continue to grind out results, picking up three draws in their last four matches, including one against Rydalmere Lions last weekend. Sitting on 10 points in 15th, they defended well once again, with Michael Singh getting on the scoresheet.
However, Darren Camilleri will need to dig into his squad depth, with Shaun Birring sidelined through injury and Dimos Vlachos suspended.
Bankstown City will start as favourites on paper but will need to improve after a shock home loss to Inter Lions last weekend. It was a harsh wake-up call, and coach Fabian Miceli will be demanding a strong response ahead of a challenging run of fixtures.
Macarthur Rams vs Northern Tigers
Saturday 9 May, 4:30pm – Lynwood Stadium
There’s a reunion storyline here as Macarthur Rams host Northern Tigers, with coach Dan Mijovic facing his former side.
The Rams come into this match off an impressive win over Blacktown Spartans, courtesy of a Chan Yelchan goal, and could have won by more.
Northern Tigers have steadied in recent weeks, recording two wins and a draw in their last three. Their defensive solidity has been key, conceding just 10 goals in 13 matches, while Jesse Spang continues to deliver in crucial moments.
Canterbury Bankstown vs Bulls FC Academy
Saturday 9 May, 5:00pm – Jensen Park
It’s a special occasion for Canterbury Bankstown, who will celebrate “Legends Day” as part of their 140th anniversary.
They come into this fixture full of confidence after a strong away win over Hakoah FC, with four goals scored in the opening 15 minutes of each half. Patrick Savor, Gino Cerasoli and William Kounnas were among the standout performers.
Bulls FC Academy may not have taken three points last weekend, but their performance against Northern Tigers showed plenty of promise. The key question remains their efficiency in front of goal — can they take their chances this time?
Newcastle Jets vs Hakoah FC
Saturday 9 May, 5:00pm – Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility
Newcastle Jets return home after picking up four points on the road across the past fortnight. Following their F3 Derby win, they drew with Dulwich Hill last weekend, with Dallo Sandy finding the net and Cayden Lobach impressing in goal.
Hakoah FC continue to struggle for consistency. A slow start cost them last weekend against Canterbury Bankstown, despite a second-half fightback through Nicholas Tooley and Phillip Lapanaitis.
Putting together a complete 90-minute performance will be the focus this week.
Inter Lions vs Dulwich Hill
Saturday 9 May, 5:00pm – Majors Bay Reserve
Inter Lions finally broke through for a much-needed win last weekend, defeating Bankstown City after a run of draws. Goals from James Khoury and Owen Duke secured a result that could prove crucial in their fight to avoid relegation.
Dulwich Hill, however, are quietly building momentum. Now unbeaten in six matches, they were unlucky not to beat Newcastle Jets last time out. Marcus Lal has been a standout, while their defensive improvement — conceding just five goals in seven games — has been key.
Rydalmere Lions vs Hills United
Saturday 9 May, 6:30pm – Rydalmere Park
A draw against Prospect United wasn’t disastrous for Rydalmere Lions, but a growing number of draws could become costly as the season progresses.
They showed resilience to come from behind, with Isaac Cunningham and Jackson Bandiera scoring, but the coming weeks may define their season.
Hills United arrive with renewed confidence after back-to-back wins over Canterbury Bankstown and Western City Rangers. Zen Gigliotti was instrumental, scoring twice, and they’ve shown they can perform away from home.
Western City Rangers vs Central Coast Mariners
Saturday 9 May, 7:00pm – Popondetta Park
Western City Rangers’ struggles continued last weekend, extending their winless run to seven matches. They sit just outside the relegation playoff spot on goal difference.
Goalkeeper Dylan Niski was a standout despite the loss, producing several key saves.
Central Coast Mariners, meanwhile, responded strongly to their derby defeat by picking up an impressive away win at Penshurst Park. Their recent away form has been excellent, taking 10 points from their last four matches on the road.
Faraz Rahimi and Ahmed Elhelou were on target last weekend, and the Mariners will head into this clash as favourites.
