Round 14 Review – League One Men’s
The promotion race and relegation battle continue to heat up as the temperature cools across the FNSW League One Men’s competition after 14 gripping rounds.
Once again, several sides dropped points in the top four shake-up, with Bankstown City the only team in the leading pack to take maximum reward.
At the other end, Inter Lions continue to crank up the pressure with another vital win in the fight for survival.
Match of the Round: Hurstville Zagreb 2-2 Blacktown Spartans
Hurstville Zagreb produced a gutsy comeback to secure a well-earned 2-2 draw against Blacktown Spartans on Friday night, overcoming both a second-half red card and a two-goal deficit in a dramatic encounter.
After taking the lead in the first half through Alessandro Lacalandra, the game was flipped on its head with the dismissal of Michael Neil. The league leaders then struck twice in fifteen minutes before Michael Vakis stepped up with a superb equaliser to rescue a point late on.
Both sides were restricted to half chances for much of the first half before Lacalandra’s opener, with Sulleyman Bangura for the Spartans looking the most likely threat. That was until just before the half-hour mark when Dion Carle was played through by Bangura after a slick passing move, only for his off-balance effort to drift wide of the right post.
Hurstville made no mistake with one of their first clear-cut chances. Lacalandra rose to head home from close range after a brilliant Paul Gagro delivery from the left byline, sending the hosts into the sheds with a 1-0 advantage.
However, the turning point arrived shortly after the restart when Neil was sent off for bringing down Bangura, leaving Hurstville with ten men.
From the resulting free-kick, the Spartans found their equaliser. Carle’s effort was tipped onto the crossbar by Jacob Botic before substitute Milos Jankovic reacted quickest to tap home into an unguarded net.
Blacktown then took the lead after the hour mark, with Darcy Ellem converting from the penalty spot after a handball inside the area.
Despite being a man down, Hurstville refused to go away. Vakis produced the moment of the match in the 69th minute, curling a stunning effort from the left into the far corner to make it 2-2.
The Spartans pushed late, even having a goal ruled out for handball and being denied by a double save from Botic, but couldn’t find a winner.
Blacktown Spartans remain top, though their lead has narrowed, while Hurstville Zagreb sit three points above the bottom two ahead of a huge clash with Prospect United next week.
Hurstville Zagreb 2 (Lacalandra 42’, Vakis 69’)
Blacktown Spartans 2 (Jankovic 51’, Ellem 64’)
