Football NSW celebrates volunteers during National Volunteer Week
Football NSW is proudly celebrating the outstanding contribution of volunteers across the football community as National Volunteer Week gets underway from Monday 18 May to Sunday 24 May.
Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers, National Volunteer Week highlights the incredible people who give their time, energy and passion to support community sport and, in particular, football across New South Wales. From match day operations to long-term club leadership, volunteers remain the backbone of the game at every level.
Football NSW acknowledges that without its volunteers, there simply is no game. Week in, week out, these dedicated individuals ensure football continues to thrive across the state, coaching junior teams, refereeing matches, managing squads, running canteens, preparing fields, coordinating fixtures and supporting clubs in countless behind-the-scenes roles.
Their contribution extends far beyond the pitch. Volunteers help create safe, inclusive and welcoming environments where players of all ages and backgrounds can enjoy the game, develop their skills and feel part of a community.
The 2026 National Volunteer Week theme, “Your Year to Volunteer”, encourages Australians to recognise the value of giving their time and talents, highlighting the joy, connection and sense of purpose that volunteering brings. This year’s theme also aligns with the United Nations’ International Year of Volunteers for Sustainable Development, reinforcing the global importance of volunteerism in building stronger communities.
Football NSW CEO John Tsatsimas said volunteers remain central to the success and growth of the game across the state, praising their ongoing commitment and impact.
“Football in New South Wales simply does not exist without volunteers,” he said.
“They are the heartbeat of our clubs and competitions, and their contribution is felt in every match played across the state each weekend.
“We are incredibly grateful for the time, passion and dedication they bring to the game. National Volunteer Week is a chance for us to pause and recognise just how important these people are to football and to their local communities.”
Football NSW will also be highlighting a series of Volunteer Spotlights across its social media platforms throughout the week, showcasing inspiring stories from across the state and recognising individuals who go above and beyond for their clubs and communities.
Football NSW extends its deepest thanks to every volunteer involved in the game and encourages the wider football community to join in celebrating their invaluable contribution throughout National Volunteer Week.
