Sydney United 58 head coach Miro Vlastelica believes his side has earned its place in the 2026 Waratah Cup Final and says the club is determined to add another chapter to its proud history in the competition.

After navigating a difficult path to the decider, Sydney United 58 now face fellow heavyweights APIA Leichhardt FC with silverware on the line. While Vlastelica knows the challenge ahead will be significant, he says the occasion is one his players are embracing.

“It is very exciting to play in a final and we can’t wait for the game,” Vlastelica said.

Sydney United 58 are the most successful club in Waratah Cup history and will be chasing a record-extending ninth Waratah Cup title, and the opportunity to lift the famous trophy once again is providing plenty of motivation.

“Sydney United have a proud history in the Waratah Cup and we want to win. We’re feeling confident going into the final,” he said.

Vlastelica believes finals are unique occasions where previous results count for very little, with APIA winning the most recent NPL Men’s NSW clash between the two sides.

“Anything can happen in a final and form goes out the window. A final is a one-off occasion and it’s about who turns up on the day,” Vlastelica said.

The Sydney United 58 coach has plenty of respect for the opposition, describing APIA as one of the competition’s most complete sides.

“APIA are a very good team. They’re strong in attack, strong in defence and they can hurt you in many areas. They’re very dangerous going forward.”

With two quality teams going head-to-head, Vlastelica believes efficiency in front of goal could prove to be the deciding factor.

“We need to create chances and take our opportunities during the game. It is going to be a tight, hard-fought contest.”

The sides met earlier this season in a closely contested encounter, with Sydney United 58 fielding a youthful line-up. While the result didn’t go their way, Vlastelica believes valuable lessons were taken from the experience.

“It was a close game when we last played them. We had a young team on the field and it was a learning opportunity for the players,” he said.

Those lessons, combined with the confidence built throughout the club’s cup run, have Vlastelica believing his side is ready to rise to the occasion.

“We are confident going into the final. We know what we have to do to win.”

For the Sydney United 58 coach, Wednesday’s decider is about more than just adding another trophy to the cabinet. It is an opportunity to reward everyone connected with one of New South Wales football’s most historic clubs.

“We want to win every game we play and we want to win trophies,” Vlastelica said.

“We want to win for our supporters, the volunteers, and all the people behind the scenes.”

With history, pride and silverware all on the line, Sydney United 58 will enter the Waratah Cup Final determined to cement their place once again among the competition’s most successful clubs.

Tickets for the match are now available, with fans encouraged to secure their place early as there will be no tickets sold on the night for one of the highlights of the NSW football calendar.
