Match of the Round: Blacktown City FC 0-4 Newcastle Jets FC

Newcastle Jets FC recorded a 4-0 victory over Blacktown City FC in their Match of the Round clash at Landen Stadium on Sunday evening.

The hosts were unable to back up their big scalp from last weekend, where they defeated another finals contender. Their best opportunities in the contest came through Molly Reckless and Layla Hamdan.

For Newcastle Jets FC, it was a big win as they moved into fourth spot on the League One Women’s ladder. Lillia Rae opened the scoring in the 47th minute before strikes from Makayla Clifton and Mackenzie Preston-Poole in the 72nd and 74th minutes made it 3-0. Isabella Walshe then rounded off the scoring with her goal in the 80th minute to make it 4-0.

The first shot of the game came from the visitors, with Navah Crofton finding space before angling her effort wide.

Blacktown City FC responded through Isabella Roderique, who made a strong run down the wing before finding Ava Luburic, whose shot flew over the bar.

The Jets surged forward in search of the opening goal. Mackenzie Preston-Poole burst into the box and forced Blacktown City FC goalkeeper Samantha Edwards into a save.

They had a chance to take the lead into the break in first-half stoppage time, with the ball falling to Makayla Clifton, whose volley narrowly missed the target.

Newcastle Jets FC made it 1-0 in the 47th minute. Aaliyah Kilroy threaded the ball through for Lillia Rae to fire home.

Anna-Liese Lobos tried to claw one back for Blacktown City FC, unleashing a shot that had Jets goalkeeper Ally Boertje scrambling before she tracked back to make the save.

The Jets continued to apply pressure, with Preston-Poole seeing an effort saved before Crofton tested Edwards from range.

Blacktown City FC went close themselves, with Layla Hamdan chasing down the ball before firing over the bar.

Newcastle absorbed the pressure before adding a second goal in the 72nd minute. Preston-Poole delivered a wicked cross which fell to Clifton, who tapped home to make it 2-0.

The Jets made it 3-0 in the 74th minute, with Preston-Poole getting herself on the scoresheet with a long-range strike.

They added a fourth in the 80th minute. A driving run into the box created the opportunity, with Isabella Walshe finishing to seal the result.

The hosts continued to fight until the final whistle, with Molly Reckless trying her luck from distance and forcing Boertje to tip the effort over the bar.

Newcastle Jets FC saw out the remainder of the match to earn three crucial points in their push for finals football.
