Leichhardt Oval is set to host the 2023 Sapphire and Waratah Cup Finals on Sunday, September 10th in what will be a historic day for the sport in NSW.

In a first for the game in NSW, both prestigious knockout Cup competitions will be played on the same day at the same venue in what promises to be a memorable day for the code.

All eyes will be on the first ever Sapphire Cup Final after Football NSW introduced the female knockout Cup competition this year.

Following on from a successful FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023™, the buzz around the code is set to continue with this inaugural final in Sydney’s Inner West.

Two well-known National Premier Leagues NSW Women’s clubs in APIA Leichhardt FC and Northern Tigers will have the honour of playing for the first ever Sapphire Cup in a match that is sure to produce fireworks between two evenly matched teams.

The Sapphire Cup replicates the existing men’s Waratah Cup knockout competition, deriving its name from the former ‘NSW Sapphires’ team who were part of the former Women’s National Soccer League.

The 2023 Waratah Cup Final will feature two historic and iconic Australian clubs as APIA Leichhardt FC set their sights on lifting more silverware as they take on a club who thrive on Cup football in Sydney United 58.

Sydney United 58 have lifted the coveted trophy six times in 1974, 1995, 1996, 2005, 2015 and 2016 while APIA five times in 1962, 1966, 1975, 2013 and 2018.

Having made its Cup debut as the ‘Waratah Cup in 1991, the competition itself has gone through several name changes with the Federation Cup commencing in 1957 before it was renamed the Ascot (Craven) Cup in 1959 but then went back to its original name in 1962.

The Federation Cup name was then changed to the Waratah Cup in 1991 where Blacktown City took out the honours defeating Avala 2-1.

“It’s going to be monumental day for football in NSW as our sport is set to celebrate two prestigious knockout Cup competitions with four fantastic teams ready to battle it out for silverware,” said Football NSW CEO John Tsatsimas.

“The Waratah Cup having a long storied history and the Sapphire Cup in its first year, the hype and excitement for our code has hit new heights as I am sure Leichhardt Oval will be the place to be come September 10 for any avid fan wanting to support our game.”
