Purple Hearts win division at Ethel McAlpine Gala

It was a memorable day for all players involved at the Purple Hearts when they took out this year’s Ethel McAlpine Gala.
"I’m so happy"
These were the three words uttered by Max Slattery, one of our Purple Hearts, immediately after learning that his team had won their division grand final.
Those who know Max will appreciate the significance of these few simple words. They are rarely expressed by someone with his kind of disability.
The Purple Hearts competed in the inaugural Ethel McAlpine Cup Gala Day winning 4 of their 5 games and drawing one.
Paul Mateo, the self-appointed captain, expressed joy as only the Prime Minister can. You can see these in the photos on our Facebook page.
It was a very proud day. I was completely over the moon to see the fruits of these players’ labour pay off with some wins and good team spirit.
Parents, family members and friends were there to cheer the Hearts on. They, like the players themselves, were beaming with joy at day’s end.
There were close to 100 players participating in the tournament, a quarter of whom travelled all the way from Melbourne to participate.
It was just wonderful to see the power of sport do what it does best – bring people together.
Please take a minute to view the photos on Facebook. I’m sure you’ll take much delight at seeing what transpired yesterday.
This is the club’s first piece of silverware (albeit see-through).
