Womens State League Round 8 Review
A Samantha Muscat nine-goal haul headlines an action packed Round 8 in the Women’s State League. Bankstown FC dominates a lacklustre Emeralds outfit 11-3 while St George also notched 11 defeating Parramatta at Melita Stadium. Meanwhile a hard fought match meant a victory for Gladesville against the revived APIA 2-1 and the top of the table clash between Nepean FC and Mt Druitt Town Rangers FC ended in a tense one all draw.
Crowds were entertained throughout Sydney as two of the games were rich of goals while the other two were a close tussle in Round Eight of the Womens State League.
Parramatta Lady Hawks 0 – 11 St George FC
Four goals from tricky winger Georgia Koinis helped St George unleash a punishing 11-0 loss to Parramatta Lady Hawks at a wet Melita Stadium.
St George who were left licking their wounds after last week’s loss to league leaders Bankstown FC arrived to this game with one thought in mind, revenge. Their intent was very clear from the outset as they pushed the Lady Hawks far into their goal with some brilliant passing and streaky dribbling.
The Saints certainly marched in as they record their first goal within just nine minutes. Koinis who was a handful on the left wing was relentless and unleashed a shot with plenty of venom. The Lady Hawk goalkeeper pulled a great save but the ball unfortunately rebounded onto a Saints player who slotted it in for the opener.
The following goals were conceded in similar fashion as St George was not shy of going for glory. Their alertness was immense as they pounced on some crucial rebounds which resulted in goals.
Though to their credit Parramatta remained positive and at 4-0 down they did not stop believing as they looked to unleash some potent counter attacking moves but unfortunately just lacked the speed up front. St George were disciplined and were not going to be broken down as they kept piling the pressure on the tiring Parramatta girls who ended the half four goals down.
The second half proved no difference as St George were punishing. Some brilliant play from Melissa Toumbelekis and Lauren Gardner proved to be too classy for the Lady Hawks defence. Through this relentless bombardment, credit must be given to Parramatta’s goalkeeper who had some heroic saves and constantly put her body on the line.
With the win already in the pocket Saints coach Billy Kirk shuffled his front line and gave Koinis more freedom. Koinis then repaid her coach with four goals in the space of twenty minutes. Her skill, vision and clinical finishing showed why she is one of the best in the league.
The win leaves the Saints at fourth place and will be happy to get back in the winner’s circle while Parramatta need to forget this loss and look forward to their next game.
Gladesville Ravens 2 – 1 APIA Leichhardt Tigers
The Ravens record a win at home but did not come easy after APIA showed some great spirit in their 2-1 loss. Goals from Paige Vansaarloos and Amy Clarke ensured the win for Gladesville while the Tigers scored through Dione King.
The Tigers have put in decent performances in successive weeks and will look to secure their first points next week. Keep it up APIA.
Southern Districts Emeralds 3 – 11 Bankstown City FC
The game was dominated by one player, Samantha Muscat. The in-form striker scored a staggering nine goals as she led Bankstown to an 11-3 win over Southern Districts. Bankstown is in full swing at the moment and no one can seem to stop them and their star striker.
Maniso Micheal and Tania Baban also chipped in with a goal each and will now turn their attentions to their crucial match with Nepean in the next round.
Mt Druitt Town Rangers FC 1 – 1 Nepean FC
This top of the table clash certainly did not disappoint as the teams played out a hard fought one-all draw. Both sides were relentless and did not give anything away. They were incredibly hungry and structured throughout the match and the result was probably a fair one.
