Young Referees flourishing at State Titles

As many as twenty-four aspiring young referees have been busily officiating and developing at the current NSW State Titles staged at Orange and the Southern Highlands.

All were handpicked from their performances in the various Football NSW youth league competitions this season chosen by the Football NSW Referee Development panel.

State Titles play a pivotal role in the selection of aspiring officials going onto bigger platforms in their careers and with the Championships playing a vital part in the pathway developed with the FFA.

Referees are currently undergoing tests and are being assessed by coaches Kris Griffiths-Jones, Sarah Ho and James Tesoriero who will then select the best 1 to 2 officials to be nominated for the up and coming National Championships at Coffs Harbour.

A further six referees will also be selected for September’s 15 boys State Titles in Kiama.

Football NSW Referees Manager Kris Griffiths-Jones urged the point that the State Titles have played an instrumental role in the growth and development of our future young officials.

“The State Titles presents itself as a fantastic opportunity for all referees to display their skills.

“I have seen a major improvement in the quality of officiating a these tournaments.

“This is due to the improved refereeing program both myself and Rob Nieuwenhuis have introduced at Football NSW.

“With further coaching and education, I feel we are heading for a very exciting time with many of these referees knocking on the A-League door over the next few years.”

It’s never too late to become a referee, for more information on this please contact your local branch.
