NPL Men’s NSW Place On The Line As Tigers Host St George

After a long 30-round season, the final spot in next year’s NPL Men’s NSW competition is up for grabs as Northern Tigers and St George FC face off over two legs across the next couple of weekends.

Looking to earn a spot in the top tier of NSW football are Northern Tigers, who finished second in the FNSW League One Men’s competition.

St George FC, meanwhile, are aiming to keep their place in the top flight after being promoted in this fixture three years ago.

The Saints come into this one as perhaps slight favourites, not that the Tigers will mind.

Let’s start with the contenders in Northern Tigers, coached by Milad Popalzay, who overcame some demons to get here.

Their second-half-of-the-season troubles were widely known, but credit to this group, an improved mentality saw them through under pressure from Bankstown City.

That mentality came to the fore a fortnight ago when they defeated Macarthur Rams in dramatic fashion, courtesy of a Jesse Spang brace and a Tom Parkes winner.

Spang, who made the move north from St George, stands as a key man for the Tigers leading the line.

Further back, their star signing Alen Aganovic has been crucial, with the Tigers conceding just 30 goals across the regular season.

They also boast a strong home record, with 10 wins, three draws and just two defeats across the regular season.

As mentioned earlier, St George FC come into this not only as the existing NPL Men’s side, but also with some experience in this environment after taking out the 2023 playoff against the then-Mt Druitt Town Rangers.

They come into this one in pretty good form considering where they finished in the standings, with two wins and a draw in their last four games of the season.

The Saints conceded just one goal between Rounds 27 and 29 against teams who had plenty to play for, demonstrating the defensive resilience that could prove crucial across two legs.

Two players stand out above the rest for St George in Chris McStay and Jaden Casella, who both have the ability to change a game in the attacking third.

They will also come into this one relatively well rested after fielding a rotated line-up last weekend.

Granted, it has been a few years since their last meeting, but prior to that it was Northern Tigers who generally fared better in their fixtures, losing just two of their last 14 against St George.

That history will count for little when the two sides step onto the pitch on Saturday, with the first leg providing the opening chapter of a two-match battle for NPL Men’s NSW status.

With the return leg to come at Barton Park next weekend, both sides will be desperate to gain an advantage at North Turramurra.
