Womens State League Round 16 Review
Nepean have taken the lead of the Womens State League whilst there were big wins for both Mount Druitt and St George, the latter putting a nine point gap between them and the chasing pack. Here is the review for Round 16.
Bankstown City FC 1 def by Nepean FC 2
In our featured Match of the Round, Nepean has arrested Bankstown City’s hold on top position after a brace of goals in the opening half to put away the home side. Bankstown have to work themselves out of this slide which now stands at three games.
The match was billed as a clash of the heavyweights, first verses second and the free scoring Bankstown against a determined Nepean. The visitors weren’t phased by the home side though, starting the game at a fast pace.
This fast pace paid off – as Nepean went ahead in the second minute, as Stephanie Lagudi slotted home for the shock lead at Jensen Park. They would double their lead just before the break from a corner, Alix Waddell rising highest to nod home a two nil lead for Nepean.
Bankstown City took 80 minutes to work into their stride, as they fought hard for a goal. Tania Baban got the breakthrough for them, finding the net with a good strike in the 84th minute. Baban almost doubled her money, denied by the post two minutes later. Nepean ran out deserving 2-1 victors.
Mount Druitt Town Rangers FC 6 def APIA Leichhardt Tigers 1
Mount Druitt have once again flexed their muscles beating the hapless APIA Leichhardt team by five goals in a dominant display at Popondetta Park.
The Town Rangers opened up the contest with a brace to Stefanie Trovato in the first half while the visitors kept in touch with Dione King netting before the break to go into halftime down 2-1.
In the second stanze it was a demolition from Mount Druitt at home. A second brace, this time to Brooke Conroy alongside finishes from Lisa Fressard and Taryn Rockall put the Tigers to sword. They find themselves sitting in second position now, on 33 points following Bankstown City FC’s loss to Nepean later that afternoon.
Gladesville Ravens 1 def by St George FC 2
Peel Park was the destination for the fourth against fifth contest that pitted St George FC – coming off a thrashing of Parramatta – against a Gladesville outfit that was gathering momentum.
St George continued their goal-scoring ways in the first half, as Melissa Toumbelekis scored her sixth goal in her last three starts to put the visitors ahead one nil going into the break and firmly in control.
The Saints added a second goal via Bronte Young who scored her first goal for the season before Hannah Kimber drew one back for the home side. Gladesville now sit nine points behind St George FC and thus outside the finals calculations.
Parramatta LadyHawks vs Southern Districts Emeralds
This game was washed out due to weather and will be played at a later date.
