Powerchair Football 2014 Nationals

Captain of the NSW Team is Chris Suffield, here receiving his jersey from John MacleanThe New South Wales Powerchair Football received their Team jerseys today at a special training session today.Starting on Tuesday 5th August the NSW Team will represent the State at the Powerchair National Titles, held at Kevin Betts Stadium , Mount Druitt. Competing over the tournament are teams from other states along with a representative team from New Zealand. The Tournament concludes on Saturday 9th August, with a Grand Final. Followed by the Ditch Cup, where the newly named Australian Team will compete against the New Zealand Team.In attendance to present each player with their jersey was John Maclean. John is an Australian triathlete, rower, and motivational speaker. A promising rugby league player in his youth, he became a paraplegic after being knocked from his bicycle by a truck in 1988. He became the first person in a wheelchair to complete the Ironman World Championship and swim the English Channel in 1995 and 1998, respectively.This year’s Captain of the team is Chris Suffield of Central Coast Mariners. At the conclusion of the presentation the team lined up for a team photo, including Team Staff. The 2014 Powerchair Football Nationals are ready to kick-off on Tuesday 5th August at the Kevin Betts Stadium in Mount Druitt with six teams battling it out over four days to be recognised as the top powerchair football side in Australia.

Powerchair football is one of the fastest growing sports for powered wheelchair users around the globe. A competitive, challenging team game, powerchair football combines the skill of the wheelchair user with the speed and power of the chair itself.

New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia, Victoria, Western Australia and Canterbury Boltz will all compete in what will be a memorable sporting event.

Prior to the kick-off of the tournament Australian Paralympian and Football4all Ambassador John Maclean presented NSW with their jerseys as well as Football NSW’s Hayley Todd and Rob Fitzgerald assisting in the presentations.

Australian Powerchair Football Association President, Mr Matt Cross, said the sport of Powerchair football has come a long way since in Australia the governing body was officially formed in 2010.
