PS4 NPL NSW Men’s 2 Round 13 Review

In a weekend of shocks in the PS4 NPL NSW Men’s 2, Central Coast have reduced Spirit FC’s lead at the top to three points, after they hit St George for six, while Spirit succumbed once more to Fraser Park.
Sydney University also made a name for themselves, coming over the top of Hakoah in late drama at Hensley Field.
Feature Game
Central Coast v St George
Central Coast sent out a warning to the rest of the competition with a 6-1 mauling of St George to go to within three points of the top of the ladder.
The result was never in doubt after two quick goals midway through the first half shot the Coast to a 2-0 lead, a lead that they never looked like surrendering. Even without the injured Josh Bingham, still to recover from a knock he received against Uni last weekend, the Coast were still too quick and agile for the Saints.
Having said that, St George could have gone a goal up early themselves, after an underhit pass by Jake McGing fell into the path of Wassim Hijazi who hightailed it to goal. Chased by four Coast defenders, Hijazi did well to get a shot in, but was wide of the mark when under pressure. It was a close call for the Coast who duly made sure that they wouldn’t suffer such a scare again.
The best way to do that of course, is to score goals, and the Coast certainly rattled them in.
After Trent Buhagiar had shot over the bar on sixteen minutes, he made amends eight minutes later when he took on Emmanuel Elali, zipped past before sliding the ball under David Hamilton. Before the Saints couldn’t even think of recovering, the lead was doubled. This time Buhagiar turned provider, a low cross from the right being knocked in by Adam Woodbine.
Even at that moment, it seemed that the game was as good as over. The Coast were cutting swathes down the right, the amount of space certainly concerning for the Saints, who shifted Joseph D’Elia across to try and stem the tide. The Coast could have had a couple more though in quick succession, Buhagiar particularly putting in two crosses which flew low across the face of goal, but evaded all.
The third did come, two minutes before the break. This time it was Lachlan Wales, showing good skill to turn inside and shoot away with a sweet shot into the roof of the net.
Some changes just after the restart for St George appeared to suggest a shift. They had looked more composed after the break, and with Stevan Ilic and then David Wilson being introduced to the game, the Saints picked up for a period. Hijazi came close with a header after some good work by Ilic, before the Saints did bring a goal back, a superb D’Elia cross being met by the leaping Ilic, who powered his header into the net.
Was there to be a St George comeback? The short answer was no. It took only a further three minutes for Central Coast to restore their three goal lead, Woodbine getting his second from the edge of the box, after the Saints failed to clear.
4-1 and still half an hour to go. There were to be more goals in this game, and it was the Coast that provided them.
Nathan Verity set up the fifth. A run down the left, the cross was not cleared and Alexander Arbelo shot low into the net.
Then with time added on slipping fast, there was still time for one more. Wales, with his brace, netted to make it six with the last kick of the game.
It was a great result for Central Coast, who were the clear beneficiaries on a weekend of some shock results. For St George, it will be a day best forgotten.

Fraser Park v Spirit FC
Fraser Park have proven to be Spirit FC’s Achilles heel with a second win over the league leaders, the only side this season to have defeated the Gladeville-Hornsby side.
They had to come from a goal down though, and with Spirit starting the better, it seemed that the visitor’s lengthy unbeaten run would continue. Abraham Majok had two good chances in the early stages, but failed to convert, but within a minute Brad Gibson put the table toppers in front.
Henry Wells was allowed room down the right and his cross was headed home by Gibson, eight minutes in.
Spirit could have increased their lead with Wells and Gosue Sama both coming close, but it was only by the one that they headed into the break.
But if Spirit had the better of the first half, Fraser Park became more animated in the second.
Stefan Jovanovic was becoming influential down the left while the Fraser midfield pairing of Hussein Akil and Paulo Oliveira were putting together some good passages of play. It was from Oliviera and Akil that Fraser got their equaliser, an interchange of passes, which started with Rocci Gabey, providing Nikola Todoroski with the task of slotting away.
Akil, who has been showing some fine goalscoring form himself in recent weeks, was to then score the winner for Fraser, with twelve minutes remaining. A superb run by Jovanovic, a through ball, and Akil fired away into the top left hand corner.

Hakoah Sydney City East v Sydney University
Hakoah looked home and hosed heading towards the end of this game. Up 1-0 from the 33rd minute, when Kevin Lopes sidefooted home following good work down the right by Jacob Esposito, it seemed they would only need to see out the final few minutes to take the win.
That was until Sydney University clawed victory away in the last five minutes, pinching the three points themselves right at the death. A superb free kick from Peter Crevani from outside the box drew Uni level with five minutes remaining, and then amazingly, they took the lead two minutes from time.
A tantalising cross from Tayfun Buyukkopru was met by the rising Gyubeom Kim, in a crowded box, heading in from close range to cruel Hakoah’s hearts.
It was an unlikely finish but that didn’t deter Uni, who celebrated like they had won the Grand Final.
Two wins on the trot for the blue and yellow. It may not be the last.

Mount Druitt Town Rangers v Bankstown City
There was a raft of changes to the Bankstown City team which lost to Spirit last week and it seemed to do the trick, as the Lions came away from Mount Druitt with a healthy 3-0 scoreline.
But the game was a lot closer than the result suggests with the sealers only coming in the final minutes of the match. It took a cracker from Huseyin Jasli which put the Lions in front, early in the first half, and though Rangers worked hard to equalise, missing some good opportunities, they were not able to breach the Bankstown defence.
Two goals in the last six minutes from Chris Gomez and Steven Veleski, both off the bench, made the result safe.

Macarthur Rams v Bankstown Berries
There was plenty of late drama at Lynwood Park with the game delayed by forty five minutes after Rams keeper Chad Taylor clattered into the goal post in a vain attempt to stop a Nicholas Paras freekick, with near ten minutes of the match remaining.
Paras’ goal put the visiting Bankstown Berries into the driving seat with a 3-1 lead but with an ambulance called, the game couldn’t restart until Taylor was safely away. It was another forty five minutes before referee Khodr Yaghi could get the game back underway, for the remaining ten minutes.
And with Macarthur having already used their three subs, defender Daniel Carrozza took over the keeper’s jersey, as the Rams faced down the Berries with just ten players.
They held their ground but by then the damage had been done. Ilkay Gurbuz had given the Berries the lead after sixteen minutes, before Gavin Forbes equalised for Macarthur.
But two second half goals to Paras gave the Berries their first win since round seven.
A dramatic night at Lynwood, and a late one.

Northern Tigers v Mounties Wanderers
Northern Tigers swept into third spot on the ladder after a 4-1 win over Mounties Wanderers, leaving the visitors adrift at the bottom.
Liam McConaghy with two, and Julian Lim and Mitchell Smith were the scorers for the Tigers, who celebrated their second win in a row, a welcome change after a dip in form.
Mitchell King responded for the Mounties, who, for the second week in a row, finished with ten after Jake Ingle was red carded.
