The Australian Football world lost a great soul on Monday as former Socceroo and Scotsman who always bore a huge infectious smile on his face, Johnny Thomson passed away at the age of 94.
Known to many as one of Australia’s most passionate footballers and supporters of this wonderful game, Johnny touched so many hearts and souls during his time on and off the pitch.
The 94-year-old dedicated his life to Football, in fact over 70 years of it, and it was earlier this year he was rewarded for his achievements after being awarded the Medal of the Order of Australia for his wonderful services to football at State and National Level and to the community.
The Collaroy resident played for Gladesville Ryde and Canterbury Bankstown in the NSW State League and then assumed admin roles with the likes of PlayStation 4 NPL NSW Men’s side Sydney Olympic as well as being a founding member of the board of Football NSW.
He was also the Chairman of the foundation committee of the National Soccer League and was also an Executive Member of the NSW Football Federation.
The smiling Scotsman whose personality could light up any room, was also the manager of the National Team that took part in the first Oceania tournament and managed many NSW overseas touring teams.
This world has lost a true gentleman of the sport, Johnny you will be ever so missed by everyone who had the pleasure of interacting with you – may you rest in heavenly peace.
