Fearless Figon ready to dance
Rockdale City Sun’s Jordan Figon believes his side’s devil may care attitude and attacking philosophy will make them tough customers when they take on APIA Leichhardt Tigers in Saturday night’s Major Semi-Final.
The Suns last week shocked competition powerhouse Blacktown City to claim an upset 4-2 win and Figon believes that performance is just a sample of what his side has to offer.
“Once again we are playing the carefree football which we displayed at the start of the season and it is when we throw caution to the wind and just play football that we are at our best,” Figon said.
“Against Blacktown everybody expected us to be on the back foot but we took control early and took the game to them. It paid off for us with early goals and forced them to change their game plan.
“We are a team that can beat anyone. We have quality players across the park and the squad all believe that we have what it takes to win this competition.
Figon’s 12 regular season goals played a big part in Rockdale’s success, but the striker said missing out on the golden boot by one goal to Sutherland’s Tomohiro Kajiyama’s was a major disappointment.
“Personal accolades aren’t normally much of a concern of mine but I feel like I threw away a golden opportunity to take home that award.
“Like the team, I play my best when I am carefree and I feel like I have regained that attitude especially in the last game against Blacktown.
“Those two goals really helped my confidence and I know I can continue to be a big contributor for the team throughout the finals.”
APIA and Rockdale shared the points in thrilling clash on the final day of the regular season with the Tigers finding a late equaliser to snatch a 1-1 draw.
After going down to ten men early in the second half before falling short of a huge upset win last time, Figon said his side won’t make the same mistake twice this Saturday.
“Last match they came out flying and with the Premiership on the line we knew they were going to take it to us from the opening whistle,” he said
“We expect a lot of the same for this week’s match but we are confident that if we can hold them out through the early barrage we will be in with a good shot.
“We get another chance if we lose this match so there is no pressure. As a team we have what it takes an hopefully we can get a win and a spot in the grand final.”
