Majors Bay Reserve in Concord played host to Inter Lions’ first ever FREE ‘Come Try Female Only’ SAP Mini Football event, a day which also saw the club honour one of their young guns in Veronique Sakr who tragically passed away last week.

A touching moment, the Lions had displayed photos and plaques of Veronique across the ground as well as seeing players sport pink ribbons and wristbands in memory of their always smiling teammate.

Mini-matches were played in her honour as Veronique’s mother Bridget was present and passed on her thanks to the club and players for paying their respects and offering their prayers and support.

Football NSW was also on hand and supported the event with a small inflatable activation as well as special showbags as giveaways.

Football NSW’s Game Development Officer and Sydney FC W-League keeper Trudy Burke was there to assist in the running of the day as well as organising Sky Blue and Matildas star Amy Sayer to pay a visit at Majors Bay Reserve. Sayer chatted to all the girls, took photos, played matches, signed boots and posters as well as giving away tickets to the club’s next Sydney Derby.

Inter Lions Club Secretary Santino Grieco paid his respects to Veronique and her brave family in what has been a difficult time.

“We at Inter Lions were shattered when we heard the news of Veronique’s passing.

“She was loved by all.

“It was very touching to see so many people pay their respects at the Mini Football Day to honour what a lovely girl and good footballer she really was.

“We wanted to do something to honour her, I know we will never forget her.”

Grieco said the day itself was a success.

“It was great to have seen so many keen and enthusiastic young female footballers playing the round ball game.

“We hope to see more of these special days run by the club.

“I want to thank everyone involved for making the day run smoothly, if we can encourage more females to play our sport from today then we’ve done our bit.”
