Football NSW would like to commend Harry Williams, our first ever Indigenous Socceroo on his acknowledgment having been inducted in the 2020 Hall of Champions.

The impact of COVID-19 has meant the NSW Champions of Sport induction ceremony was not able to be held in 2020 with the announcement being made online.

Minister for Skills and Tertiary Education, Acting Minister for Sport, Multiculturalism, Seniors and Veterans Geoff Lee applauded Williams and fellow inductees for their well deserved plaudit.

“The NSW Hall of Champions is a fantastic way to pay homage to NSW’s most elite athletes, who have gone above and beyond in their specialised field.

“Highlighting these sporting achievements through the exhibition at Sydney Olympic Park aims to educate and inspire the future generation, helping them realise that nothing is beyond their reach.”

Williams’ notable career included 43 games for Australia, including 20 full ‘A’ internationals and a 1975 match against Manchester United in Sydney.

Since retiring, Williams has continued to give back to the Indigenous community, becoming manager of the Indigenous Services and Cultural Diversity Unit for ACT Correctional Services.

Williams also helped launch ‘The Harry Williams Cup’ – an indigenous football tournament which brings indigenous youngsters from around NSW together for a tournament.

Football NSW CEO Stuart Hodge heaped praise on Williams’ thoroughly deserved accolade that also featured other notable Australian sporting inductees such as Volleyball’s Kerri Pottharst OAM, Surfing’s Mick Fanning, Surf Lifesavings Naomi Flood and F1 Australian legend Mark Webber AO.

“At Football NSW, we are both delighted and proud that Harry Williams has been inducted in the 2020 Hall of Champions.

“He deserves it because his achievements continue to inspire others today, and because a humble man deserves to be celebrated as part of our game’s history.

“Harry has been a pioneer for most of his life, and this recognition is richly deserved.”

A highly respected Australian football figure, we are very proud to see Harry continuing to kick goals, well done Harry.
