Bankstown District Amateur Football Association General Manager Leanne Millar highlighted her excitement as registrations for the 2021 Grassroots season have commenced in what will be an important year for the code.

“As COVID-19 ran rampant in 2020 which resulted in the sport playing a condensed season, we were fortunate enough to have played the game we all love and that was thanks to everyone involved in the sport doing their bit.

“2021 is a year of growth and prosperity on the back of a unifying 2020 season and we are all excited that we are all able to play the game we all love once more very soon albeit in safe and happy environments.”

With registrations kicking off, Millar was proud with how the Association’s $50 rebate introduced two years ago for girls who register in their ‘Girls Only Small Sided Football program had taken off, unveiling more exciting news and discounts for females playing the sport in 2021.

“It’s been a very successful initiative which was pushed two years ago and we’ve this season extended the $50 rebate to our Under 10’s and 11’s Girls wanting to register and play football in our area. In summary, our Under 6’s, 7’s, 8’s and 9’s Girls competitions are also part of this rebate offer as well.

“Female Football is continually on the rise and we at Bankstown want to see more girls playing the sport who in turn could potentially become future Matildas hailing from the area.”

The constant drive for more referees and volunteers were also pinned high on Bankstown’s priority list with Millar hoping to see an increase in both these areas in 2021.

“We are always looking for more referees to officiate our sport and we are looking at putting on more courses to encourage participants to join.

“The same goes for volunteers, we are very keen in seeing many more people join the Bankstown Football family so please email our offices and we can put you in touch with a club close by who would really appreciate the support.”

Football runs in Millar’s blood and her involvement with the round ball game started as a young teenager where it was there the 43-year-old realised she wanted to be part of the sport.

“I have been involved in football from a young teenager, playing at my local club (East Bankstown), which I am still affiliated with. Once I had Children and returned to my local club, as the years went on, I became involved in the committee of the club and then, through a delegates meeting, joined the BDAFA Judiciary as a panel member. From there I was introduced to the Board.

“My passion during these years was to improve the football experience to participants both at a club level and then at an Association level and it’s something I hope we can build on year upon year.”
