Hahn Australia Cup Round 5 Delivers Drama as Round 6 Showdowns Await
The Hahn Australia Cup Round 5 Preliminary fixtures have concluded, delivering a host of emphatic results and dramatic moments that have set the stage for a blockbuster Round 6.
With four coveted spots in the Round of 32 up for grabs, clubs are now just one step closer to realising their dreams of national exposure and the possibility of hosting an A-League opponent.
NPL Men’s NSW side SD Raiders FC produced a dominant display, comfortably dispatching Illawarra Premier League outfit Shellharbour FC 5-1 at Barrack Heights Park. The Raiders shared the goals around, with Mihael Marcic, Robert Eremugo, Riley Cox-Barlow, Dusan Ciganovic and Yonatan Sebhatu all finding the back of the net in an impressive team performance.
It was also a big night for Manly United, who knocked out Sutherland Sharks 2-1 in an all NPL Men’s NSW clash at Seymour Shaw. Samuel Griffiths gave the visitors the lead midway through the first half before Brendan Gan equalised for the hosts. However, the decisive moment came through Jared Muir, whose winner sealed progression for Manly and ended the Sharks’ cup run.
One of the standout results of the round came courtesy of League Two Men’s side Fraser Park FC, who stunned League One high-flyers Bankstown City FC with a remarkable 6-2 victory. Despite Bankstown fielding a younger squad, Fraser Park showed no mercy, with Paul Turrin and Fenn Hodgson-Yu both scoring doubles, while Reuben Awaritefe and Andrew Vlahadamis also got on the scoresheet. The win sets up an intriguing Round 6 clash against fellow Bankstown-based side Bankstown United FC.
Sydney University Football Ground hosted one of the most thrilling encounters of the round, as Eastern Suburbs Football Association side Glebe Gorillas bowed out in heartbreaking fashion against Sydney University SFC.
The Gorillas looked set for a famous victory, racing to a 3-1 lead after goals from Daniel Durkin and others had them firmly in control. However, a late surge saw Sydney University fight back, with Isaac Folkes scoring late before Joseph Roddy struck deep into stoppage time to send the match into extra time. With neither side able to be separated, the game went to penalties, where Sydney University prevailed 4-3, ending a brave run from the Gorillas.
Elsewhere, Hakoah Sydney City East eased past Bonnyrigg White Eagles with a 4-1 win, while Rockdale Ilinden proved too strong for Fairfield Pats FC, recording a commanding 6-0 victory. St George City also impressed, defeating Camden Tigers 5-1 to book their place in the next round.
One of the biggest boilovers of the round came at The Crest, where Sydney Olympic FC stunned high-flying Marconi Stallions with a 1-0 victory. Max Luburic’s 60th-minute strike proved the difference in a result that breathes new life into Olympic’s season.
Having struggled in the NPL Men’s NSW competition, the result, coupled with their recent win over UNSW FC, suggests a positive turnaround under new leadership, with Michael Melito’s influence already beginning to show. For Marconi, it represents a missed opportunity, with their focus now shifting back to the Premiership and Championship races.
With Round 5 now complete, attention turns to what promises to be a captivating Round 6, with several high-quality matchups locked in.
