Football NSW League One club Canterbury Bankstown FC will celebrate an incredible 140-year legacy this Saturday afternoon, hosting a special “Legends Day” as they take on Bulls FC Academy in a milestone occasion for one of the game’s most historic clubs at Jensen Park.

A club that has endured through generations of players, coaches, volunteers, and supporters across multiple identities within the Football NSW system, Canterbury Bankstown FC is affectionately known as “the Berries,” a nickname rooted in its Canterbury origins.

With a rich history in Football NSW competitions, the Berries were a top-flight mainstay throughout the late 20th century and even reached the national stage, competing in the NSL in 1986.

A defining chapter of the club’s journey came through the influence of Greek migrants in the 1960s, whose passion for football, strong sense of community, and tireless volunteer spirit helped shape the club both on and off the pitch.

One such figure is Spiro Hantzis, who represented the club for 17 years and recently reflected on its deep cultural ties.
“Canterbury Marrickville in that time (1980s) was a big club in the Greek community, along with Sydney Olympic, so it was a real buzz playing for them,” he said.

Today, Canterbury Bankstown FC stands as a proud reflection of its past, grounded in tradition, enriched by multicultural influence, and united by a shared love of the game that has endured for 140 years.

Reflecting on the milestone, Hantzis added.
“The club has always had ambition. It’s always had people driving it, so I’m not surprised to see it reach 140 years.”
Asked to sum up his time at the club in one word, his answer was simple. “Friendships”—many of which have lasted a lifetime.

That spirit will be front and centre this Saturday, as the club honours its past greats during Legends Day. A non-exhaustive list of names includes Johnny Warren, Johnny Watkiss, Ron Corry, Graham Arnold, Charlie Yankos, Aheleas Kostopoulos, and Hantzis himself—figures who have all contributed to the club’s enduring legacy.

The celebration will recognise the impact of these legends through a special pre-match event, held alongside the First Grade fixture. Players will also wear a bespoke retro commemorative jersey to mark the club’s 140-year milestone, with merchandise available on the day ahead of the club’s Gala Dinner on Friday, 31 July.

Kick-off is set for 5:00pm, with festivities beginning from 4:00pm in what promises to be a memorable occasion for the Berries and their community.
