Football NSW is saddened by the passing of one of the state’s most respected and decorated coaches, Yiannis Xipolitas.

Born in Cyprus, Yiannis (John) enjoyed a distinguished playing career, featuring in the top tier of the Cypriot First Division with Olympiakos Nicosia. He was also capped twice for his native Cyprus before emigrating to Australia.

After arriving in Australia, Yiannis transitioned into coaching and became one of the most influential figures in NSW football throughout the 1970s, 80s and 90s. He coached several clubs across the state including Canterbury-Marrickville Olympic, Sydney Olympic, Cyprus United and Belmore Hercules, among others.

Renowned for his leadership and football knowledge, Yiannis mentored numerous players who went on to represent Australia and achieved success across both club and individual coaching honours. He was widely admired and deeply respected by all who had the privilege of working under him.

Football NSW extends its deepest and sincerest condolences to the Xipolitas family. May he rest in peace.
