Heavyweights set to collide as APIA Leichhardt FC and Sydney United 58 FC battle for Waratah Cup glory
There are few bigger fixtures in New South Wales football than APIA Leichhardt FC against Sydney United 58 FC, and Wednesday’s 2026 Waratah Cup Final promises to add another memorable chapter to one of the state’s greatest rivalries.
Two of the competition’s most decorated clubs have earned their place in the decider through impressive semi-final victories and now stand just 90 minutes away from lifting one of the state’s most prestigious trophies.
The road to the final
Sydney United 58 booked their place in the final after overcoming Sydney Olympic FC in a dramatic 5-2 extra-time victory. Locked at 2-2 after regulation time, and being ahead 2-0 at half-time thanks to a double from Carlos De Oliveira, Sydney United’s experience and composure shone through as they scored three unanswered goals in extra time to keep their hopes of a record-extending ninth Waratah Cup title alive.
APIA Leichhardt’s path was equally impressive. The reigning NPL Men’s NSW champions produced an attacking masterclass in a 4-2 victory over SD Raiders, with young gun Oscar Gonzalez scoring twice as APIA controlled much of the contest to reach their second Waratah Cup Final in three seasons.
Familiar foes
History suggests there will be very little separating these two sides.
Whenever APIA and Sydney United 58 meet, intensity, quality and drama are almost guaranteed. Both clubs boast proud histories, passionate supporter bases and winning cultures, making this one of the standout rivalries in Australian semi-professional football.
The two sides have already met in a Waratah Cup Final, with Sydney United 58 edging APIA 3-1 in the 2023 decider, while recent league encounters have also been fiercely contested; with APIA winning the most recent battle 2-1 in early May.
That familiarity means there will be few surprises when both sides take the field at Valentine Sports Park.
Players to watch
For APIA Leichhardt, much of the attacking threat centres around young gun Oscar Gonzalez, whose clinical finishing in the semi-final underlined his ability to deliver in big moments. Alongside the creativity of fellow young gun Max Court and the attacking support of Presley Ortiz, APIA possess one of the most dangerous forward lines in the competition.
You can also throw into the mix of experienced defenders Themba Muata Marlow as well as Michael Kouta, keeper Oliver Kalac returns following his overseas trip which will no doubt strengthen Franco Parisi’s side.
Sydney United 58 have no shortage of match winners themselves and feature a dynamic mix of clinical wingers and crafty playmakers, with De Oliveira and Michael Krslovic capable of dictating the tempo while also providing a goal threat. United’s resilience against Sydney Olympic FC demonstrated the depth within the squad, with multiple players stepping up when the pressure was at its highest.
Mason Wells is one to watch out for, a tricky customer, he will look towards putting his stamp on the match while United 58 will be skippered by the experienced head of Adrian Vlastelica who always wears his heart on his sleeve for the club.
Probable Lineups
Sydney United 58: Pavlesic, Rule, Vlastelica, Rose, Wada, De Oliveira, Tilo, Glassock, Krslovic, Nakano, Wells
APIA Leichhardt FC: Kalac, Kambayashi, Stewart, Konestabo, Muata-Marlow, Symons, Monge, Kouta, Caspers, Fong, Gonzalez
Where the final will be won
The midfield battle is likely to determine who lifts the trophy.
APIA prefer to dominate possession, moving the ball quickly through the thirds before exploiting space in wide areas. Their attacking football has overwhelmed opponents throughout the season, but they will need to be patient against a disciplined Sydney United 58 defence, led by captain Adrian Vlastelica.
For Sydney United 58, controlling transitions will be crucial. If they can disrupt APIA’s rhythm and turn defence into attack quickly, they have the experience and physicality to trouble any side. Their ability to remain composed in high-pressure moments was evident in the semi-final and could again prove decisive.
With silverware on the line, two historic clubs chasing another trophy and no shortage of quality across the park, the 2026 Waratah Cup Final has all the ingredients to be a classic. Whether it’s APIA reclaiming the cup and winning it for a sixth time, or Sydney United 58 extending their remarkable Waratah Cup legacy, supporters can expect a fiercely contested battle worthy of the occasion.
Tickets for the match are now available, with fans encouraged to secure their place early as there will be no tickets sold on the night for one of the highlights of the NSW football calendar.
