Football NSW’s commitment to developing regional talent was on full display last week, with Under 14 Boys and Girls squads from the Talent Support Program (TSP) Regional competing at the Football Victoria ID Cup.

The tournament provided an invaluable opportunity for some of NSW’s most promising regional players to test themselves against representative teams from across Australia, including Football Victoria, Capital Football, South Australia and Tasmania.

Both Football NSW squads featured 20 players selected from the TSP Regional program, which includes regional hub training sessions, elite games and regional game days designed to identify and develop emerging talent from across the state.

The teams were led by Football NSW Technical Staff, with Andrew Fearnley coaching the Under 14 Boys and Ricky Guihot leading the Under 14 Girls.

They were supported by TSP staff members Bruce Grassick (Boys) and Mel Pennington (Girls), with Liam Dedini working as Goalkeeper Coach and Tom Havill and Kkhyrsa Katsaro providing physiotherapy support throughout the tournament.

The Under 14 Boys enjoyed a memorable campaign, finishing the pool stage second behind Victoria Rovers before producing a strong semi-final performance against Victoria Country.

The boys then secured revenge over Victoria Rovers in the Grand Final, producing a composed display to claim a 2-0 victory and lift the FV ID Cup trophy.

The Under 14 Girls also impressed throughout the tournament, finishing the group stage undefeated.

After a hard-fought semi-final against Victoria Rovers ended 1-1, the girls were narrowly defeated on penalties. They responded strongly in the playoff match, finishing the tournament with an impressive 5-1 victory over Victoria Strikers to claim third place.

Beyond the results, the tournament provided an important development opportunity for both squads, allowing players to experience high-level representative football and gain valuable preparation ahead of potential selection for the 2027 Emerging Championships squad.

Football NSW Regional Development Football Manager Andrew Fearnley said the tournament was a valuable experience for the players and staff involved.

“We are proud that the Under 14 Boys came away with the trophy, as it demonstrated their ability to compete in a tournament environment, and it was pleasing for the Under 14 Girls to top their group and win the third-place playoff,” Fearnley said.

“More importantly, this was an opportunity for us to assess the Under 14 playing group in a competitive environment ahead of the Emerging Championships selections.

“It also provided regional players with the opportunity to play high-level football matches in addition to the TSP Game Days we hold throughout the year.

“Being able to work with this age group through the selection process, and then see them perform at the ID Cup, has been very beneficial.”

The FV ID Cup continues to provide a valuable platform for emerging players from across Australia, and for Football NSW’s TSP Regional program, it represents another important step in ensuring talented players from regional areas have access to quality development environments and representative opportunities.

The success of both squads in Melbourne highlights the depth of football talent across regional NSW and the ongoing work being done to support the next generation of players.
