Club Capability Building Workshop supports development of Football NSW Leagues coaches
Football NSW recently delivered a Club Capability Building workshop focused on match day communication and sideline manner for coaches as part of the Club Technical Development Program. The purpose of the workshop was to support Heads of Programs and coaches across Football NSW Youth Leagues and Junior Development Leagues clubs in developing consistent, effective match day behaviours that align with the organisation’s strategic objectives, values, and commitment to long term player development.
The workshop was delivered in a practical, scenario based environment and was facilitated by Neil Mann, Joe Fox, and Andrew Christiansen, who are all involved in supporting Heads of Programs across clubs. Andrew Christiansen demonstrated a range of realistic match day scenarios in the role of a coach, allowing Heads of Programs to practise using observation, assessment, and support tools. These scenarios then formed the basis for discussion around effective communication methods and how to provide meaningful feedback, both prior to match day and in post event conversations.
“This workshop gave Heads of Programs the opportunity to practise how they observe, support, and communicate with coaches in real match day environments,” explained Joe Fox, Football NSW Club Technical Development Coordinator.
“By focusing on consistent sideline behaviour and clear, timely feedback, we hope to help create a more positive and aligned experience for players, parents, and coaches across our programs.”
The session highlighted the depth of knowledge in the room, with coaches in attendance from Football NSW competitions clubs across the state, spanning from Newcastle to Nowra. Coach engagement and collaboration were strong throughout the evening, with open discussion and shared learning across clubs. With over 80 coaches in attendance, the workshop marked the highest turnout to date, reflecting strong buy in to club standards and the ongoing commitment to coach development.
The value of the workshop was reflected by participants, with Fraser Park Head of Programs Dilan Pais saying, “I found the evening extremely beneficial in helping Heads of Programs recognise different coaching styles and better understand how to effectively support coach development.”
By strengthening capability in match day communication and sideline conduct, the workshop aims to improve consistency across clubs and enhance the overall experience for players, parents, and officials.
