Danny Horstead Calls Time On More Than 30 Years Of Refereeing
The NPL Men’s NSW First Grade fixture between Blacktown City and Western Sydney Wanderers on Sunday, 30 August will mark the final match of an outstanding refereeing career for Danny Horstead, bringing the curtain down on more than three decades of service to the game, including 15 years officiating at the highest level in NSW.
Danny’s refereeing journey began in North West Sydney when he was just 14 years old.
From those early days, he developed a passion for officiating and steadily progressed through the refereeing pathway, earning opportunities to test himself at higher levels.
In 1998, Danny attended the NSW State Titles, with his performances recognised the following year when he was nominated for the National Youth Championships and selected to referee in the National Youth League.
His progression continued over the following years, and in 2012 Danny joined the NSW State League Football Referees Branch, taking the next step in his career and establishing himself as a respected match official across NSW competitions.
Throughout his career, Danny has been trusted with a number of significant appointments in a variety of roles, including as a referee, assistant referee and fourth official.
Among his notable appointments were the 2015 NPL 2 NSW Men’s Elimination Final between Central Coast and Bankstown City, where he served as an assistant referee, before returning to the biggest stage in 2016 as an assistant referee for both the NPL Men’s NSW Grand Final between Blacktown City and Sydney United 58 and the NPL 2 Men’s NSW Grand Final.
In 2018, Danny was involved in the NPL 3 NSW Men’s Semi-Finals in both refereeing and assistant refereeing roles, further demonstrating his versatility and experience across the Football NSW competitions.
More recently, Danny was appointed fourth official for the 2024 NPL Men’s NSW First Grade Grand Final between Rockdale Ilinden and Marconi Stallions, another prestigious appointment in a career that has spanned more than 30 years.
While Danny’s achievements on the field have been significant, his contribution to refereeing extends well beyond his match appointments.
Danny has become heavily involved in the coaching and development of young match officials, sharing the knowledge and experience he has gained throughout his career with the next generation of referees.
For the past four years, Danny has served as Head of Education for Central Coast Football Referees, where he has played a key role in leading the Central Coast Football junior referee development program.
His work has been focused on growing and strengthening the pathway for young match officials, helping provide aspiring referees with the support, education and guidance required to progress through the game.
That commitment to development will continue beyond his final match.
Although Danny will be stepping away from officiating on the field, he has now become involved in the Football Australia Referee Observer Program and will continue his work with Central Coast Football Referees.
His transition from match official to mentor and observer ensures the wealth of experience accumulated over more than three decades will continue to benefit referees across NSW.
Danny’s final appointment at Blacktown City’s NPL Men’s NSW First Grade clash against Western Sydney Wanderers will therefore mark the end of one chapter, but certainly not the end of his contribution to refereeing.
