Round 30 Preview – League One Men’s

After a long season, Round 30 of the FNSW League One Men’s competition is set to give us some answers in terms of the teams who qualify for the playoffs and who suffers the automatic drop.

Match of the Round: Western City Rangers v Northern Tigers

Saturday 29 August, 7pm – Popondetta Park

All eyes turn to Popondetta Park for a clash between two sides who have a lot to play for as Western City Rangers host Northern Tigers.

By the time kick-off comes around this Saturday, Western City Rangers will know exactly what they need to do in this game.

Five points in their last five games, including a win last weekend against Central Coast Mariners, gave the Rangers a one-point advantage over Prospect United.

Conceding twice early, it was a horror start for the Rangers, but their physicality advantage helped them in the second half.

Reuben Awaritefe was a constant contributor on the goal front, with Dimo Dimo and Tung Dang also earning positive mentions post-match.

They will have to overcome poor home form, though, with just one win in their last five at Popondetta Park.

Northern Tigers will be coming into this after the high of last weekend, knowing that a point will be enough to confirm themselves in second position.

On the back of a four-game unbeaten streak and just one loss since Round 21, it is tough to look past them heading into this one.

In the dramatic win over Macarthur Rams, a lot of credit has to go to coach Milad Popalzay and his coaching staff for the changes they made at half-time, with one of those changes, Tom Parkes, going on to score the winner deep into injury time.

They will be without Oliver Scott in this one due to suspension.

Elsewhere

Prospect United v Hurstville Zagreb

Friday 28 August, 8pm – Valentine Sports Park

Results did not go in favour of Prospect United last weekend in their battle to avoid the drop, but they could apply pressure on Western City Rangers with a win or draw here.

Losing just 12 games this season, the 14 draws are ultimately what have put them in this position.

Last weekend, they were beaten by Bankstown City away from home, with Antonio Orlando scoring an equaliser before the hosts ran away with it.

Competitive throughout this season, you can be sure they will be up for a fight here.

It is a meeting of the two promoted sides who joined the league back in February as they take on Hurstville Zagreb.

It has been a good season from the visitors, who secured safety a long time ago courtesy of a good run at the start of the second half of the season.

This could see a few names play their last game for the club, including Michael Neil.

They look well set up for 2027, though, with a young starting eleven taking the field more often than not.

Can that inspire them to a 90-minute performance here?

Newcastle Jets v Bankstown City

Saturday 29 August, 5pm – Lake Macquarie Regional Football Facility

Bankstown City travel up the M1 knowing they need a win, and a big win, to have a chance of featuring in the promotion playoff.

Trailing Northern Tigers by three points, they also need to make up a nine-goal deficit.

Kicking off before the Tigers, they could well apply pressure if they are able to get the result here.

Last weekend, they won 5-1 against Prospect United at home in Jeffrey Issa’s farewell.

Indeed, their form has been good ever since Round 20, with only one loss in that time, coming in Round 28.

Can they pull off a miracle here?

Newcastle Jets were the last side to secure safety last weekend with a point on the road against Hakoah FC.

It has not been easy going for any of the academies, which is probably more of a reflection on a stronger competition as a whole.

They have secured a point in four of their last five fixtures, including three draws, last weekend taking the lead twice with Jake Goodwin, Jesse Hill and Archie Brideson all finding the back of the net.

We could see a different look to this team this weekend with A-League commitments.

Hills United v Central Coast Mariners

Saturday 29 August, 5pm – Valentine Sports Park

It is a bit of a shame that Hills United did not find this level of consistency until right at the tail end of the season.

Three wins on the bounce have them comfortably in sixth position, with a chance of potentially finishing as high as fourth.

Last weekend, it was Hunter Mateo who scored a brace late on, scoring twice inside 10 minutes on the back of a Jordan Small equaliser.

Daniel-Ray Djurovic was another player who impressed on the defensive front.

They face a Central Coast Mariners side who fell to a 4-2 loss against Western City Rangers last Sunday.

It is hard to draw too many conclusions from their results late in the season given the youthful nature of their squad.

Their Round 29 win over Hurstville Zagreb was perhaps their best in that context.

Flynn Sadler is our player to watch in this one after scoring a brace last weekend.

Last meeting: Central Coast Mariners 5-3 Hills United

Canterbury Bankstown v Macarthur Rams

Saturday 29 August, 5pm – Jensen Park

Two of the most improved clubs in the League One Men’s competition meet at Jensen Park on Saturday evening.

We’ll start with Canterbury Bankstown, who lit up the competition with a great run of results between Rounds 15-23 which saw them climb into contention.

Indeed, reflecting on the season, 29 of their 48 points have come since Round 16, including an impressive win over Bulls FC Academy last weekend.

William Kounnas scored their third in that game after Fikret Berisha and Lorenzo Mirashaj also found the back of the net.

They face Macarthur Rams, who have well and truly over-performed even their own expectations in the first year of their rebuild project under Dan Mijovic.

Their playoff hopes faded after their defeat to Northern Tigers last weekend in rather cruel fashion.

However, that should not take away from their season as a whole, and they will want to farewell the likes of Alex Gollan in positive circumstances here.

Paul Soravia remains a noteworthy goalscoring threat from set pieces approaching this one.

Last meeting: Macarthur Rams 0-2 Canterbury Bankstown

Inter Lions v Hakoah FC

Saturday 29 August, 5pm – Majors Bay Reserve

Inter Lions will conclude their season at home well clear of safety. It is a situation we probably did not see coming, having not won their first game until Round 13.

Including that win over Bankstown City, they have secured 32 points in 17 games.

Last weekend, they backed up their victory over Bankstown City with a win over Dulwich Hill at Arlington Oval.

Mitchell Smith and Vincent Fedele scored the goals before seeing the game out in confident fashion.

Hakoah FC continued their goalscoring ways with a 3-3 draw against Newcastle Jets last time out.

A team well and truly enjoying having the pressure off them, they sit seventh with nine wins, nine losses and 11 draws this season.

Twenty-one of their 38 points have come in the second half of the season.

Nicholas Tooley leads their Golden Boot race with 14 goals, while Benjamin Fuchs has been consistently one of their best players this season.

Last meeting: Hakoah FC 1-3 Inter Lions

Rydalmere Lions v Dulwich Hill

Saturday 29 August, 6:30pm – Rydalmere Park

In contrast to a lot of sides who have improved the competition, Rydalmere Lions have secured just 16 points since Round 12 this season, including four losses in their last five games since their last win.

No doubt, they have used this period of the season to rotate at times, but they will still try to finish their season well here.

Adil Toska has been one of their most consistent routes to goal this season, with 10 goals in 24 starts.

Despite no real difference in their points tally year on year, you would suggest this season has been one of growth for Dulwich Hill, who sit in 13th approaching the final round.

A season in which they have had to deal with quite a few injuries with a thin squad, they secured safety in Round 28 with a win.

Last weekend was tough going, though, against a good Inter Lions side, with a slow start ultimately costing them a chance at a result.

They have secured 15 points away from their Arlington home this season.

Last meeting: Dulwich Hill 2-1 Rydalmere Lions

Bulls FC Academy v Blacktown Spartans

Saturday 29 August, 7pm – Sydney United Sports Centre

Bulls FC Academy will finish their season with their toughest test yet against the Premiers.

A mid-table side who have established themselves as the best academy side in 2026, they have taken just four points in their last five games, with A-League preparations ramping up.

Last weekend, they lost their fixture against Canterbury Bankstown despite playing with a man advantage for an hour.

Their squad has taken a different shape on a weekly basis at this point of the season.

They play a Blacktown Spartans side playing their last game in the division for the time being after securing promotion.

Putting together one of the most impressive campaigns of late, they have a chance to climb above 70 points with a victory here while also notching an impressive 77 goals.

Last weekend, they put six past Hurstville Zagreb, with a four-goal second half separating the sides.

Ahmad Taleb scored two of their six goals, while Aedon Kyra scored again to take his tally to 24 goals for the season.
