History And Survival Collide As Parramatta Meet Prospect

Parramatta FC and Prospect United SC will face off in the 2026 Football NSW League Two Men’s/League One Men’s Promotion/Relegation Playoff in a Western Sydney derby between two clubs with a big head-to-head history.

For Parramatta FC, the aim is to take a big step towards getting the storied club back up the pyramid, with the Eagles hoping to return to the League One Men’s competition for the first time since 2017.

Prospect United SC, meanwhile, fought hard to avoid automatic relegation and will hope their one-season stay in their first-ever League One Men’s campaign does not end with an immediate return to the third tier in NSW.

With Prospect hoping to maintain their status as a League One Men’s club and Parramatta hoping to cap off what has been a strong season with promotion, this Western Sydney derby will provide plenty of drama, action and passion.

Here is what to look out for in the first of two legs ahead:

Parramatta FC will hope to return to the League One Men’s competition for the first time since 2017, with the six-time NPL NSW Premiers and six-time NPL NSW Champions hoping to cap off what has been a remarkable season for the club as they continue their fight back up the Football NSW pyramid.

Parramatta finished second in the League Two Men’s competition in 2026 on 57 points, 14 points behind Premiers Mounties Wanderers FC but nine points ahead of third-placed Fraser Park FC, with their second-placed finish secured following a 1-0 win over Fraser Park in Round 29.

The Eagles had three players score 10 or more goals in 2026, with Darragh Reynor scoring 10, Dean O’Donnell finding the net 11 times and Marco Sama finishing runner-up for the Golden Boot with 24 goals.

In defence, Parramatta had the equal-third-best record, conceding just 36 goals from 28 matches while keeping nine clean sheets in 2026. They will look to that defensive resilience to aid them against Prospect.

Parramatta have played with confidence and without fear throughout 2026, taking each match as it came and only losing back-to-back matches twice this season.

The Eagles come into this series off the back of seven straight wins, with three clean sheets during that run, and will hope to take that form into these two matches.

In attack, Parramatta have scored 16 goals from their past five matches and have timed their run of form perfectly for the playoff, looking to bring that same attacking intent to Prospect.

Led by Head Coach Tarek Elrich, as well as leaders across the squad including Marco Sama and Travis Oughtred, the Parramatta squad is full of experience. They will hope that experience helps them remain calm and composed in these matches.

Parramatta will be full of confidence and belief, not only from their results and finish this season but also from the mentality instilled in them by the coaches and leadership group within the club throughout 2026.

Expect Parramatta to come out strongly at home as they look to strike the first blow against Prospect and take momentum into the second leg.

Prospect United SC, meanwhile, won two of their last three matches to save themselves from automatic relegation, sending Western City Rangers FC down in their place, and they will hope to continue that late-season form to avoid the drop against Parramatta.

Prospect finished the 2026 League One Men’s regular season in 15th place on 26 points, avoiding relegation on the final matchday with a 3-0 home win over Hurstville Zagreb FC, a result which put them two points ahead of Rangers in 16th.

Prospect left their best performance of the season until last in that win against Hurstville and will hope to take the momentum from that match, as well as their 3-0 away win over Rydalmere Lions two weeks prior, into this playoff.

Looking to avoid relegation in their first-ever League One Men’s campaign, Prospect will hope their experience of playing in the second tier in NSW will give them an edge, having come up against very strong sides throughout 2026.

The player to watch in attack will be Liam Bajada. The 19-year-old Maltese has grown into the season and has started nine of 19 matches in the League One Men’s competition, including the past seven, scoring two goals including a brace against Hurstville.

In defence, Prospect goalkeeper Stefan Giglio has been a highlight between the sticks, saving Prospect and earning them crucial points throughout the season.

Prospect have won six of the past eight head-to-head meetings against Parramatta, with the Eagles completing the league double in the 2024 season, while Prospect completed the league double in 2022, 2023 and 2025.

Prospect scored the fewest number of goals in the League One Men’s competition in 2026, with only 33 scored from 20 matches, but with nine goals scored from their past five matches, they have found attacking form late in the season.

In defence, Prospect conceded 52 goals, which ranks equal eighth among all League One Men’s teams, showing that if they can get the job done up front, their defence will be strong enough to keep them in matches.

Prospect will hope to bring their late-season form into this playoff series. Expect them to put up a strong fight under the leadership of Darren Camilleri, who led them to promotion in 2025, as they look to take the advantage in the first leg away to Parramatta in this Western Sydney derby.

Both Parramatta and Prospect will hope to rise to the occasion, with this not only being a Promotion/Relegation Playoff but also a battle for further pride as two Western Sydney clubs go head-to-head.

Expect Parramatta to come into this match with confidence following their form this season across attack, midfield and defence, while Prospect will approach the contest with belief given their battle-hardened season and late run of form to avoid automatic relegation.

With two crucial matches remaining for both clubs in 2026, the stakes do not get higher than a place in a higher or lower competition for 2027.

It is a battle of desperation versus history, West versus West, with both Parramatta and Prospect hoping to take the advantage in the first leg.
