Vale Tony Stecca
Football NSW extends its deepest condolences to the family, friends and wider St George FC community following the passing of long-time clubman Tony Stecca, who passed away on Saturday, 12 September at the age of 89.
Tony was a much-loved and respected figure within St George football, having dedicated more than five decades of his life to the club.
His connection with St George began in the early 1970s during the days of St George Budapest. From those early days, Tony’s passion for the club never wavered, becoming a familiar and much-loved presence around the team and its matchdays for generations.
Over the decades, Tony contributed to St George in countless ways, serving as a team manager, gear steward, matchday official and ground handyman, among many other roles.
His service spanned the club’s journey from the national league era through to its time competing in the NPL and League One competitions.
Tony’s late wife, Dianne Stecca, was also an important part of the club community, serving as St George’s gatekeeper.
Tony’s dedication extended beyond the senior men’s team. He became a regular and much-loved presence at St George’s League One Women’s matches and was a firm favourite among players, coaches, officials and supporters on the sideline.
His contribution to the club has been recognised through the Tony Stecca Volunteer of the Year Award, which is presented annually at the St George FC Women’s Presentation Night.
Even as his health declined, Tony’s love for St George never diminished.
Nothing could keep him away from Barton Park on matchday, with his final appearance coming just over three weeks ago when St George faced Blacktown City.
Tony’s passing represents the loss of a remarkable servant of the club and a person whose dedication helped shape the St George football community across more than 50 years.
Football NSW acknowledges and celebrates Tony’s extraordinary contribution to the game and extends its sincere condolences to his family, friends and everyone at St George FC during this difficult time.
