Match of the Round
Prospect United 3
Fairfield Bulls 3
Prospect United and Fairfield Bulls played out a 3-3 draw at William Lawson Reserve on Saturday afternoon.
Prospect who is leading the competition in top-spot began the game sharply with some quality possession. J. Vella and A. Maxwell were outstanding in the opening stages linking up in the midfield. P. Landrelli was again effective up-front for the home-side, chasing down every through ball with full commitment.
The Bulls didn?t get a sniff at goal until the 9? minute and it was via a set-piece from S. Dawd; his effort an easy save for Prospect goalkeeper S. Smith.
The shot-stopper played an outstanding game and was again called into action in the 16? minute to save sensationally a one-on-one incident. The Bulls were struggling to hold possession but their front-man S. Mayayalo was outstanding. N. Filips was trying to inspire the away-side when he made a dash down the left side taking on three defenders, only for his efforts to be stopped by in-form Prospect defender C. Senat.
S. Dawd could have opened the scoring in the 29? minute when he latched onto a sensational cross from N. Filips but despite the effort Dawd?s header drifted over, leaving the game still on level terms. Fairfield was beginning to create chances and they were rewarded in the 31? minute when S. Dawd was brought down in the penalty-area. S Dawd nicely slotted the ball to the ?keeper?s left giving Bulls a 1-0 lead.
Prospect responded within Seconds, J. Vella equalised for the home-side after a cross from D. Miralles put J. Vella clear with space allowing him to strike a shot past Bulls ?keeper K. Kando. It was a good contest between the two sides and the game went into the break with the scores locked at 1-1.
The second-half began like the first with Prospect taking control with most of the possession, the Bulls were on the back foot and it cost them in the 56? minute when a great run down the right side by P. Landrelli ended in what was a spectacular cross inside to J. McLeay who put his side 2-1 up.
It was a tight contest and the Bulls were unlucky not to equalise in the 65? minute. S. Dawd was in a one-a-one position, nicely placing his shot to the right side of goal; however a fantastic save by S. Smith kept Prospect in the lead.
Despite the missed opportunity the Bulls were awarded a penalty in the 69? minute and once again S. Dawd kept his cool to slot away his second of the game .
At 2-2 both sides were drawn into a physical contest and the home-side could have gone ahead in the 80? minute when A. Pejic hit a follow up shot off a Landrelli free-kick with only the ?keeper to beat, however his chance drifted wide.
The Bulls took a surprise lead in the 84? minute when S. Mayayalo tapped in a brilliant cross from R. Hirmiz who created a fine burst down the right side to find his team-mate Mayayalo in the middle and give the Bulls a 3-2 edge with 6? minutes remaining. The Bulls were heading for a surprise win until P. Landrelli struck a sensational free-kick in the 94? minute to level the game at 3-3. The game finished with both sides sharing the spoils in what was an intense encounter.
